Having a NED plan for your first role is an excellent way to launch and achieve success in your NED career. It should also ensure that you set yourself up well for future NED roles that you may also like to take on.
The process can take time, involve much thought, planning, and of course a bit of luck too.
When NEDonBoard interviewed Ruth Cairnie, an experienced NED on the boards of a number of FTSE 100 companies, she highlighted the importance of having 1) a suitable background, and ensuring her executive career continued to develop her for future NED roles (something to be aware of); and 2) having a well thought through personal marketing plan.
She notes that this involved a concerted effort, to appropriately build her network and profile, but this strategic approach to becoming a NED and developing her NED career has certainly paid off.
