Shaping cyber governance: The power of NEDonBoard membership 🚀

We are proud to mark a significant milestone in board-level cyber resilience with the publication of the UK Cyber Governance Code of Practice, a framework designed to empower non-executive directors and boards in addressing cyber risks with confidence and competence.

At NEDonBoard, Institute of Board Members, we are particularly honoured to have played a part in this national initiative. NEDonBoard member and digital NED, Susanne Alfs, served as a direct contributor to the development of the Code, working alongside the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Susanne Alfs

Member and Ambassador of NEDonBoard

My membership with NEDonBoard has provided a platform to drive meaningful improvements in cyber governance.

Recognised for my expertise, NEDonBoard, Institute of Board Members asked me to represent the NED member community in a series of UK Government-led workshops contributing to the development of the UK’s Cyber Governance Code of Practice. As part of this national effort, I worked alongside key stakeholders, including representatives of the Department for Science Innovation and Technology and the National Cyber Security Centre to shape a code of practice that strengthens board-level oversight of cyber risk.

Drawing on my experience as a NED, combined with my business, technology, and cyber expertise, I contributed to developing a code tailored for board members across industries. This framework ensures that cyber governance is embedded at the highest levels, equipping NEDs with the guidance needed to drive cyber resilience within their organisations.

Through NEDonBoard’s engagement with government bodies, I am proud to have played a role in developing a lasting resource that enhances governance standards and strengthens the intersection of board leadership, business strategy, and cybersecurity.

Susanne’s involvement is a shining example of how our engaged members benefit from their affiliation with NEDonBoard but also influence the broader governance landscape. Her participation brought to the table insights from her extensive experience as a NED, business leader, and cybersecurity expert, helping to tailor the code for the realities of boardrooms.

A testament to active membership

NEDonBoard is a professional body: we are a platform for action, influence, and leadership. Members who actively engage with the community unlock opportunities to:

  • Serve as regional ambassadors or topic leads on emerging boardroom issues.
  • Represent the NED community in government consultations and taskforces, as Susanne did.
  • Contribute to the development of thought leadership and best practice guidance.

These opportunities elevate individual members’ profiles as well as ensure that the voice of the NED community is well represented where it matters most.

📈 Our team’s contribution: elevating cyber governance through training

Alongside Susanne’s invaluable role, the NEDonBoard member community contributed directly to the development of cyber board training to support the Code. Drawing on member insights and feedback on early drafts, we ensured that the training addresses practical needs and equips board members to exercise effective oversight.

The NCSC was particularly pleased with NEDonBoard’s involvement and the quality of member feedback, highlighting the importance of our collaborative approach in shaping relevant, actionable, and forward-looking governance frameworks.

A collective success 🤝

We extend our thanks and congratulations to our members who reviewed and commented on the training, and to our internal team for their work. The successful publication of the UK Cyber Governance Code of Practice is a collective success, proof that when board members engage, they drive it.

As a NEDonBoard member, your expertise can influence policy, uplift board standards, and improve governance across sectors. If you’re not yet involved, now is the time to step forward. Opportunities await those who are ready to contribute.
